Welcome to BetterCrossrail.co.uk

It is now almost universally accepted that London needs Crossrail. Unfortunately the version of Crossrail that the government is planning to build is so expensive that it is likely to create great resentment in other parts of the country, particularly where relatively cheap light rail schemes have been cancelled. And if the forecasts for an economic downturn are correct then little money will be available for other projects, so this problem will only get worse.

Mayor Livingstone claimed to be keen to see a rolling program of crossrail routes initiated, but actively backed a version of Crossrail so expensive that were it to be built, funding for any further Crossrail lines would be unavailable for decades.

Now that London has a new mayor, it has the opportunity to avoid this terrible mistake!

The BetterCrossrail plan solves the problem by making Crossrail line 1 a lot cheaper, so that London will still get the benefits of Crossrail but more money will be available for other projects both in London and in other parts of the country.

With Crossrail Line 1 costing much less, its economic benefit will be more obvious, strengthening the case to build more Crossrail lines, so Line 1 will be the beginning, not the end. The BetterCrossrail scheme includes a plan for other Crossrail lines to be built, giving priority to what is most urgently needed.
